In Vanuatu, a nakamal is the chiefs hut where community meetings and traditional ceremonies are carried out. More importantly, it is where kava is consumed. A nakamal generally takes the form of a large building, assembled from traditional materials with the help of the community. Most nakamals lack a lockable door, indicating that all friendly visitors are welcome.
