A prominent fature of Vanuatu's rich and unique culture are our handwoven mats. They are made from the leaves of the pandanus plant, which are stripped from the tree and soaked in the ocean before being laid out onto the beach to dry.
The dried leaves are then woven into various intricate designs, mats are used as a form of currency in traditional ceremonies such as marriage, death, and initiation of chiefs. Certain mats have particular custom purposes and designs that depict their uses.
These mats were handwoven on the island of Ambae and are perfect for taking to the beach, as decoration in your home, or for when you'd like to go to the park and relax. They are also 100% biodegradable since they are made entirely of pandanus leaves.
