FAQ

What is Kava?

Kava is a traditional drink made from the kava plant (scientific name: piper methysticum). It is native to the Pacific Islands and is believed to have originated in Vanuatu.

How is Kava prepared and consumed?

The roots of the kava plant are pulverized and water is added. The mixture is then kneaded to extract the kava juice from the pulverized material. It is then filtered to remove the fibrous material and you are left with kava juice.

This juice is traditionally consumed in coconut shells in a social setting. DO NOT SIP YOUR KAVA, the shell is to be consumed all at once. Wait 10 to 20 minutes before consuming your next shell. A normal shell is usually 100mL to 200mL+, depending on your experience with kava.

How do I prepare myself to drink kava?

Kava is best consumed on an empty stomach at sunset (also known as kava time in Vanuatu). It is best experienced in a quiet setting with dim lights and with friends, drinking kava promotes social interaction and is often used traditionally to bring peace among different groups of people.

What are the effects of kava?

The effects can be described as calming, kava promotes a state of relaxation. At lower doses it can make one more sociable and create a sense of bonding between those who drink it. At higher doses it becomes more sedative, muscles relax and it can make you lethargic. Everyone has their own "sweet spot" when it comes to drinking kava, once you have found it you will know when you have had enough.
